TRICARE Covers TMS for Major Depression
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an FDA-cleared, noninvasive treatment for adults with major depressive disorder. It may be appropriate when antidepressant medications have not provided adequate relief or have caused difficult side effects.
TRICARE covers outpatient TMS for adults with major depressive disorder when applicable medical necessity and authorization requirements are met. Williamsville Psychiatry can help determine eligibility, verify benefits, gather clinical documentation, and request prior authorization when required.
Coverage is determined by the patient's specific TRICARE plan, eligibility, diagnosis, treatment history, referral requirements, and authorization decision. Learn more from the official TRICARE TMS Coverage Page .
What to Expect From TMS
TMS uses focused magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. Treatment:
- Does not require anesthesia
- Is performed in an outpatient office
- Allows most patients to resume normal activities immediately
- Does not cause the systemic medication side effects associated with many antidepressants
- Is administered through a structured series of treatment sessions
Every patient receives an individualized evaluation to determine whether TMS is clinically appropriate.
Care Designed Around Military Life
We recognize that service members and military families may face concerns that are different from those encountered in civilian life. Treatment is individualized around symptoms, responsibilities, family circumstances, treatment history, and personal goals.
Seeking care is a sign of strength. Early treatment can help protect health, relationships, functioning, and quality of life.
